My friend Kirk Palayan went through a windshield of a car during an accident a couple of years ago. He has been in chronic pain ever since and the Western medical doctors had nothing to offer him outside of drugs and surgery – which weren’t working for him. After exhausting his pharmacy he became willing to work with me on eliminating his pain through complementary alternative medicine. We took a mind, body, spirit approach and Kirk received treatments from an Alexander Technique teacher (Mind-Sharon Jakubecy), an Acupuncturist (Body-Michael Fox), and a Reiki Master (Spirit-Rev.Patricia Bankins). When I first met Peter Bedard it was for an amazing community mural we were going to create in Los Feliz with my students at King Middle School.  A year later I had a car accident.  The head on collusion left a permanent mark on my forehead and I had pain in my upper shoulder and neck area. Through chiropractic treatment the pain subsided and I was able to have a much better quality of life.  After a few months passed though I began feeling a slight pain next to my left knee cap.  The pain continued for months and in June of 2009 I found myself in the ER for this as well as a growing pain in my lower back.  By October the pain had reached a level where I was not able to walk or stand for more than a few minutes.  I was told that I had 2 herniated discs that were putting pressure on a nerve that went down my leg.  The neurosurgeon advised me that my only option was a surgery which required 2 months of recovery.  I had a very sedentary life and it was a very frustrating experience.  Peter, although not an MD, had some other ideas for me.
The 1st treatment he took me to was the Alexander Technique with Ms. Sharon Jakubecy.  Apparently I was walking, sitting and functioning improperly and that was causing undue stress and pain to my joints, bones and muscles.  Sharon was able to show me how to literally move through life. I can honestly tell you I felt an immediate strain lifted off my body while working with her.  I am very grateful for having learned the techniques that have since made a profound difference in my life.

The next treatment was acupuncture with Dr. Michael Fox at Silverlake Acupuncture.  Dr. Fox’s acupuncture technique was very subtle yet extremely effective.  He focused on my lower back and other areas and working with him felt like another layer of entrenched pain lifted off me.  It is amazing how pain I had experienced over a year, was affected by one visit, I definitely plan on going back again.
My final treatment was the Reiki healing at the Crystal Matrix. I had never felt sensations like that before.  Reverend Bankins was able to do a massage technique that was so unique and spiritually uplifting, that it is indescribable.  I can say that it felt like my soul was ‘massaged’ and the pain that had pervaded my whole body was diminished.

I am so very grateful for all of the professionals who I met that day in June, they all really listened and made an effort to understand what I was experiencing, and instead of just talking about invasive approaches to dealing with my problems, they showed me that there are alternative and healthy approaches that can make profound changes that really made a difference in my quality of life.  I thank Peter Bedard again for introducing me to a universe of alternative medicines.
